The International Foundation for Retirement
Education (InFRE) has been named one of the sponsors in a Call For
Papers (CFP) addressing Retirement
Spending and Changing Needs During the Retirement Period.
Chief Sponsor for the CFP is the Society of Actuaries, with
other sponsors including InFRE, the Employee Benefit Research Institute, the Profit
Sharing/401(k) Council of America, the Social Security
Administration, and others.
The CFP is open to all professionals knowledgeable in
the subject matter. Collaboration is encouraged and
authors may submit more than one paper. Papers are due August 15, 2006.
The changing environment for retirees and
retirement planning─issues at the forefront of InFRE’s
overall mission─is wide open to the exchange of fresh ideas as
encouraged by this CFP. A
retiree’s expenses are a core determinant in the success of a
retirement plan, influencing how assets and risks should be managed
in order to optimize the retirement experience.
Traditionally, in order to continue the same pre-retirement
living standards in retirement, it was thought one needed 70-80
percent of pre-retirement income at retirement just to cover basic
cost of living increases. But
many people now work on a less-than-fulltime basis early in
retirement and receive a lump sum of retirement savings to manage,
resulting in reduced or nonexistent employer-paid health coverage. Some
experts now say that more than 100 percent of pre-retirement income is needed because of
rising medical costs and long term care needs, while others
conversely suggest that expenses can be greatly reduced in
retirement and that 40-50 percent of pre-retirement expenses is an
appropriate target for retirement planning purposes. Still
others believe
there are stages of retirement where the level of expenses will
vary.
These are but a few of the many issues facing
today’s retirees. As
the retirement industry strives to develop new ways of achieving
retirement goals, the sharing of ideas to encourage finding and
exploring innovative approaches to those goals is a tremendous
opportunity for those seeking new solutions.
All of this is particularly important today as
retirement planning software and worksheets are adapted for
retirement counselors to account for the new retirement environment
where people are living and working longer, and have higher
retirement expectations than previous generations.
A review committee will
determine if a conference or symposium for presenting the papers is
appropriate. We invite you to
