A Call for Research Papers
For submission in the
Financial Services Review:  The Journal of
Individual Financial Management

In our continuing effort to provide the highly-relevant research and education for retirement industry professionals, InFRE is jointly sponsoring a call for papers on topics relating to retirement planning and employer-sponsored retirement plans to be published in a special edition of the Financial Services Review:  Journal of Individual Financial Management (http://www.pfp.gsu.edu/FSR/FSRhome.htm).

Our co-sponsors include two well-respected organizations, the Arthur N. Caple Foundation (www.caplefoundation.org), and the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans (www.ifebp.org), whose missions similarly reflect InFRE’s in its dedication to enhancing the retirement readiness of the American worker.

We are seeking forward-looking research-based papers on the topics below that reflect today’s new retirement environment and are offering $500 cash awards to the top two winning papers.   The deadline for submission is March 7, 2008.

Paper Topics:  Specifically, the papers being sought should address one or more of the following topics:

  • Target Date Funds:  Are they appropriate during the income distribution phase of retirement?  Do they help employees in the public sector achieve retirement readiness in conjunction with their defined benefit plan?
  • Retirement Planning in the Public Sector:  How should retirement planning and income management differ for public sector employees versus private sector employees?
  • Participation by Lower Income Employees:  Has the Federal Savers Tax Credit assisted lower income employees in saving for retirement, and if so, how?
  • Qualified Default Investment Alternatives (QDIA):  What relevance do QDIAs have on the public sector?
  • Loans:  What are the potential long-term effects of loans on retirement security?
  • Investment Advice:  How well are public sector employees making informed retirement and Social Security timing decisions?  How could the provision for “advice” in the Pension Protection Act of 2006 affect public sector employees?
  • Roll Out of Plan Assets:  Analyze the roll out of plan assets from public sector defined contribution plans by type of employer (state, county, and local).
  • Hardship Withdrawals:  Identify the demographics of hardship withdrawals between public and private sector defined contribution plans.
